Bridal Make-up... EXTREME Trial 1

Today, I thought I'd be good and go to the gym after work, forgetting that this lunchtime I had booked a make-up trial with a Laura Mercier make-up artist called Beccy. I had the make-up trial but wondered whether or not to keep the make-up on during my workout and see how the make-up would fair. After consulting my 'fetti ladies, I went for it...

The Application
For the base, Beccy only used a primer, tinted moisturiser and a few dots of concealer. Since I haven't caught much sun yet, she added a dusting of bronzer then setting powder. She said I didn't need a foundation or eye concealer. Quite nice to know that a professional thinks I have good, even skin :)

Blusher next. First we tried a subtle blusher, but after we started the eyes, Beccy decided to use a darker blush called Winter Bloom.

Next, Beccy penciled my eyebrows and advised some reshaping to be done on my left brow to make them look even. I can see what she means, so I will be booking a threading appointment tomorrow.

We decided to try a smoky eye, as it's not a look I usually wear. Beccy started with an eye primer in Flax, followed by a cake eyeliner close to my lashes. Next Beccy blended some kohl in Brown Copper on my lids. On top of this, she used a three eyeshadows: Tigers Eye, Stellar and Black Plum. It was interesting to see her working and just how many brushes were used.

Beccy finished with a lick of mascara and a lipstick called Fresh Brown. Here are a couple of pics I took after I got back from work and had my lunch. Note that the lipstick had faded as I'd eaten:

I could barely feel the make-up. I definitely wasn't caked in the stuff. I love the look and how it feels. Thanks Beccy ;)

Now, just so you know, I sometimes slip my shoes off when at my desk. I also keep a spare pair of flat shoes under my desk.... In my rush to get to get the usher presents before the gym, I quickly put on my shoes and ran out of the office. When I got to the gym, I realised I'd taken one of each shoe! Doh!

Here is a pic of me just before I get into the gym and about five hours after the make-up was applied:

You can see that the shadow is ever so slightly more on my bottom lids now.

T+6hrs (and my workout)
Despite me being a bit sweaty, the make-up seems to have mostly stayed put. Here is a pic of me looking rather dazed - my legs were rather wobbly from all the leg exercise drills I did tonight:

T+6.5hrs (and a Sauna session)
I decided to warm down in the sauna to stop my legs from going into shock. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, so thought I'd take another pic to show how I looked after the sauna:

The phrases 'very sweaty' and 'panda eyes' come to mind. You can see I'm tired, as my eyes have really creased.

The make-up has to last about 9 hours on the day. It lasted 6 hours with a gym workout, without any touch up. So I conclude that Laura Mercier products are really good.

Beccy is a great make-up artist, if she wasn't really out of budget, I'd have gone with her to do my make-up on the day. I'm not sure if I will use this look for the wedding, but would definitely wear this look again.

That said, I feel more confident that I could do my own make-up on the BIG Day. I just need the right make-up, tools and a lot of practice!

I look forward to my next make-up trial, though I'm not sure if it'll be as extreme in testing as this one!

I woke up at the ungodly hour of 07:00 this morning. I don't have kids and it's Good Friday. So why did I wake up so early - note this is even earlier than when I get out of bed on a work day! H2B had to shoot off to work, so I decided to get up and start sanding the bathroom walls... having realised that this would be a most heinous act so early on a Bank Holiday, I decided to finish the revamp of this blog until a more civilised time.

As you can see, I've changed the blog colour scheme to fit in with the wedding colour scheme.
I've added some tabs at the top to home page to
  • my favourite Links
  • explanation of the Abbreviations I use
  • Gallery placeholder for my Wedding Pics :)
I also added a fish bowl, cos I think it's fun - click on the bowl and you'll drop some food for the fishes to eat. Note that there are 8 fishes, 8 being a most lucky number ;D

Update on Hardware:
  1. Dell laptop is almost completely replaced after 3 engineers came to look at it - new fan, heat sink, motherboard, DVD drive and bezels. Seems to be working, if a bit slow now. So another phonecall with Dell next week.
  2. TomTom is back from the Repairs dept and is working fine. Just need to find the charger now...
  3. WD External Drive - still got to sort this one out!
Finally, I'd like to share this T-Mobile ad, which I'm sure a few of you have already seen, but one does find it most amusing...

And now for the sanding! Happy Easter xx

Bridezilla in Style

Have finally got round to scanning the "What it feels like... to be marrying a bridezilla" article I read in The Sunday Times Style Magazine, from last month. I found it rather amusing:

Today my Hanfu dress arrived at my office. I ordered it way back in February. I'm waiting for the office post man to deliver it. I. Can. Not. Wait. I think I might pop from all the pent up excitement!

MoB and FoB both have their outfits sorted. No pics, as they want the outfits to remain a surprise. However, I can say that both of them are wearing silver or grey, which kinda throws out my colour scheme as I wanted the BMs to wear grey to match the Ushers. The Ushers will be wearing Grey Spirit kilts with purple ruche ties. A bit like this:

I'm undecided between black, purple and green for the BMs. Not sure if I will go for purple, as that's the colour I want for my twist dress (will be ordering a twist dress for me to take on honeymoon). I need to finalise the colour for the BMs, so we can get them ordered!

In the meantime, I am still waiting for engineers to fix:
  1. Dell laptop - Fan, heat sink, front bezel, back bezel all fixed. 3rd time lucky with the motherboard?
  2. TomTom - finally got it sent to their repairs department.
  3. WD External Drive - actually I have to do some home checks first, before they will look at it, but I still may have lost most of my data :(
Wish me luck! (where is my dress already? hrumph)

... 17:38 Update:
The dress isn't what I'd hoped for. I won't go into detail, as I don't want to give anything away. What I will say is that I'm glad I have a plan B and that I'm happy to go with this dress.

Also, Dell laptop now seems to be working - apparently, it didn't occur to the first engineer to check that the processor was fully connected to the board.

Rings on the Mind

It's funny, for some reason this morning, I decided to take my engagement ring off my chain and wear it on my finger. I have to say, I do like the feeling of having such an important ring on my fourth left hand finger.

For the majority of the time that H2B and I have been engaged, I have worn the ring on my necklace because it's a bit too small for me and it was meant to be a temporary ring, until we found "the ring". Some time has passed since the initial proposal and with the costs of the wedding mounting up, I'm quite happy to have an eternity or half-eternity ring as my wedding band. We've done some initial research on this, but we don't have to buy the rings until much later this year, unless we have them made for us. So we can come back this in another post.

I just read an article on the BBC news website about husbands not wearing wedding rings. Apparently it was only just after WWII that it was commonplace for men to wear wedding bands. It made me think. My dad doesn't wear his wedding ring - I've never known him to. He once said because he's a nurse, he uses his hands a lot and couldn't wear the ring. I think that his current employers do allow plain wedding bands to be worn, but really I guess after 40 years of not wearing a ring, he's not going to change now. I don't think that wearing a ring makes a marital commitment any less important. Indeed, I don't think that  'not getting married' lessen one's commitment to one's life partner, (God, I know that H2B will mock me for using 'one').

Anyway, H2B works mostly with his hands and damages/loses things easily; for example he's had 6 mobile phones since July 2009. So we have to be practical. We'll probably get him a titanium ring as they are durable, look nice and aren't hideously expensive (considering that we may be replacing the ring quite often ;) The alternative is to follow this old trend of not wearing a ring, but I want him to wear a ring and I think that he too wants to wear a ring. Mostly I think because we want to show the world that we belong to each other.

I also recall that some husbands wear their rings on their little finger. Again, this isn't something very commonplace. It's an interesting alternative, but I also remember that husbands can usually measure their wives' ring size by placing her ring on his little finger.

I remember as a young girl, my mum telling me that I shouldn't wear a ring on my fourth left hand finger as it's for married women. So for a very long time this finger has been naked. It's no wonder that wearing a ring on this finger is very symbolic and important to me.

In the end, I think that you have to be comfortable with something that you will have for the rest of your married life. I, for one, look forward to placing the wedding band on H2B's finger and receiving my band from him.

Thursday, 7 April 2011

I know I'm ahead of schedule, but that hasn't really stopped me from doing some wedding stuff. For example, I've started knitting one of my gifts. However, I've had to restart it 4 times and I still can't get it right. The yarn I'm using is Fyberspates Sparkle sock Gold:

It's fingering weight so is really delicate and fiddly. I got it from Tall Yarns n Tales at last month's Stitch and Craft show. I also have it in a couple of other colourways but with it being so difficult to work with, I'm not sure I'll use it. I might change the pattern, so I'm researching on Ravelry.

Scarlet Flori

Wednesday I went to LK Bennett and found some really nice bridal shoes. And they are in the sale. Yay!
Thursday, I looked online cos the lady told that they have them in other colours. Including red. None online Boo. Found them in my size at the Westbourne Grove store but they'd only hold them for me until 7pm, so I had a mad dash after work, running up and down Portobello Road but I got the shoes and found a bag to match :)

Other Stuff
I've booked the photographers, a nice couple who own a company called What Image. H2B and I really love the way their pictures pop! Here are some examples:

It seems I've been terribly efficient and I've managed to get ahead of my to-do list schedule. Meaning that I can probably relax for a couple of months - of course that's not likely to happen ;)

Mother's day was nice. Spent most of the day at my parents cleaning their PC and chatting with my mum. We also had dinner at The Ark, a nice fish resto. Unfortunately H2B is feeling a bit under the weather so he couldn't make it. I ate far too much food, so don't think I've done too well on the diet front today :$
